Norman Gate Lodge has given a donation to Andover Trees United for its youth and outdoor learning work at Harmony Woods, handed over by volunteer Carl Bakes.

Norman Gate Lodge, the Andover masonic lodge, has made a donation to Andover Trees United, the volunteer-led charity that runs Harmony Woods. The charity says the money will go on its outdoor learning, youth engagement and conservation work with children, young people, families and volunteers. The amount has not been disclosed.

The cheque was handed over by Carl Bakes, a member of the lodge who, with his wife Naomi, has supported and volunteered with the charity for many years. Carl was closely involved in the early stages of building The Cabin at Harmony Woods, which the charity describes as a practical base for outdoor learning, volunteering and community activity on the site.

Why the lodge chose the charity

Members of the lodge have seen the charity’s work at first hand through their own volunteering, according to Andover Trees United, and back the practical chances it gives young people to understand, enjoy and protect the natural world.

Speaking for the lodge, Carl Bakes said:

“Normangate Masons are pleased to support Andover Trees United and the important work it does for the Andover community.

“ATU has created something very special at Harmony Woods, which we appreciate as a unique community nature space where young people, families, volunteers and local organisations can come together, learn about the natural world and help protect it.

“As local volunteers ourselves, we understand the value of community-focused projects and the difference they can make. We are delighted to support ATU and hope this donation helps its work continue to grow.”

What the charity says

Liz Scrace, treasurer of Andover Trees United, said:

“We are extremely grateful to Norman Gate Masons, and to Carl and Naomi, for their generous support. Donations such as this make a real difference and help us continue our work with young people, volunteers and the wider community.

“Carl and Naomi have been valued supporters and volunteers for many years, so it is particularly special to receive this donation through Norman Gate Masons. Their support will help us continue developing Harmony Woods as a place where people can learn, volunteer, explore and connect with nature.”

About Andover Trees United

The charity works with schools, volunteers, families, businesses and local partners to care for nature, improve biodiversity and teach people of all ages through practical work. Its programme covers outdoor learning, woodland care, wildflower restoration, youth nature activities, community volunteering and events at Harmony Woods and The Diamond Wood.

That includes Tree Ents & Skylarks, its monthly nature club for 12 to 15 year olds, which we covered when Bug Girl’s October session was announced.
