The A303 shuts both ways past Thruxton on four more nights this week. New no-waiting lines took effect on Walworth Road and North Way on Saturday.

The road west out of Andover closes overnight for a second week running. From 9pm to 6am on the nights of Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, National Highways closes both carriageways of the A303 either side of Thruxton for structures work.

Below is every Andover roadworks closure that is live now, what starts in the next fortnight, and the train weekend to plan around.

Closer to home, new double yellow lines came into force on Saturday on parts of Walworth Road, North Way and Finkley Farm Road. They are permanent.

North Way is still shut at Walworth Road for gas works that can run to early December. Last week’s closures at Grateley, Kings Somborne, North Baddesley and Lee Lane have all ended.

This week: four more nights on the A303 at Thruxton

National Highways closes the A303 either side of Thruxton on the nights of Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, each time from 21:00 to 06:00. The work is on structures. Closed each night:

  • the A303 westbound from Hundred Acre to Parkhouse Cross
  • the A303 eastbound from Parkhouse Cross to Thruxton Village

Two A303 slip roads close on single nights on top of that. The eastbound Parkhouse entry slip closes on the night of Wednesday 23 September, and the eastbound Thruxton Circuit entry slip on the night of Thursday 24 September, both 21:00 to 06:00.

There is more on the A34 corridor Andover uses for Winchester and Southampton, including one on the stretch Andover drivers join at Bullington Cross:

  • A34 southbound, Litchfield entry and exit slip roads, 21:00 to 06:00 on the night of Monday 21 September.
  • A34 southbound, Whitchurch entry slip road, 21:00 to 06:00 on the night of Wednesday 23 September.
  • A34 southbound, Bullington to M3 junction 9, a full carriageway closure for planting work, 21:00 to 06:00 on the night of Thursday 24 September.

The M3 junction 9 northbound entry slip road has been shut since 3 August. It is booked to stay shut until 1 November 2027, which makes it the longest-running closure anywhere on the National Highways report.

New no-waiting restrictions around Walworth Road

Hampshire made a permanent order on Tuesday 8 September that came into force on Saturday 19 September. It puts no waiting at any time on parts of five lengths of road in the Walworth and Finkley area:

  • Finkley Farm Road, north side, from the access road to Finkley Down Farm and for 134 metres west of it
  • Finkley Farm Road, south side, from the same access road and for 140 metres west
  • North Way, both sides of the spine and the north spur, from the junction with Walworth Road and for 242 metres north
  • Walworth Road, south side, from a point 20 metres east of Central Way and for 183 metres beyond it
  • Walworth Road, north side, from a point 370 metres east of the North Way roundabout and for 160 metres beyond it

The order reference is A2170/MJB. Anyone who wants to challenge it in the High Court has until Tuesday 20 October 2026.

What is closed now in and around Andover

North Way is shut at Walworth Road. The order closes North Way between its junction with Walworth Road and a point about 60 metres north west, so SGN can carry out gas works. It started on 7 September and allows up to 91 days, working full time. Thirteen weeks takes it into the first week of December. The signed alternative route is North Way and Walworth Road.

Penton Road, Penton Grafton, is shut on weekdays for about another week. It closes between The Leas and Chalkcroft Lane, 08:00 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, for up to 22 days from 7 September, which reaches about 29 September. The contractor is McAllister. The road is open in the evenings and at weekends. The signed diversion is Foxcotte Lane, the A342, the A343, Goch Way, Charlton Road and Foxcotte Road.

Floral Way has temporary traffic lights until about 28 September. SGN’s contractor I&G Contractors Limited started replacing the gas main on 24 August, for about five weeks. This is delay rather than diversion. SGN’s customer line is 0800 912 1700.

Part of Andover Footpath 31 is closed until 16 October, for work installing a cycle way. The notice does not describe the section in words. Hampshire’s Countryside Access Team is on 0300 555 1391.

The Bunny and the A3057 Leckford Lane are closed today. Hampshire made the order on 21 September for a single day, 09:30 to 15:30, so Openreach can test poles. The Bunny closes between Leckford Lane and Longstock Road, and the A3057 Leckford Lane from its junction with the A30 to a point 442 metres north east of The Bunny. Longstock is about seven miles south of Andover. The diversion is High Street, the A30, the A343, the A303 and the A3057.

The Hollow, Broughton, is due to reopen about 22 September. It closes between Horsebridge Road and the end of the road, 08:00 to 16:30, so the McAllister Group can seal a sewer. The notice expects no longer than 18 days from 4 September and lists no alternative route.

Last week’s closures that have ended

  • High Street, Grateley, closed 24 hours a day for five days from 14 September.
  • Church Road, Kings Somborne, one day on 14 September.
  • Winchester Road and The Cross, Kings Somborne, from 15 September, expected two days.
  • Rownhams Road, North Baddesley, five days from 14 September.
  • Lee Lane, Romsey, one day on 15 September.

What starts in the next fortnight

  • Rookery Lane, Broughton, from Tuesday 29 September. It closes between High Street and Broughton Drove, expected to take no longer than seven days, 08:00 to 16:30, so Lining Division Ltd can seal a sewer. The diversion is Horsebridge Road and Rookery Lane. Hampshire has notified an intention rather than made the order, so treat the date as a plan.
  • Straight Mile, Ampfield, from Wednesday 30 September. It closes between Jermyns Lane and the A3090, 24 hours a day, expected to take no longer than 11 days, for utility works by Connect It Utility Services Ltd. The diversion is the A3090. This is also an intention rather than a made order.
  • Pound Lane, Ampfield, from 21 September to 2 October, closed 24 hours a day between the A3090 Winchester Road and Flexford Road, for MGJV to lay a new water main. The earlier phase in Green Lane finished on 19 September.
  • Cricketers Way to River Way bus arch, Andover, one night between now and February. Hampshire made an order on 26 August for a single overnight closure, 22:00 to 06:00, between Cricketers Way and River Way, so Xeiad can inspect the Network Rail bridge. The notice gives no alternative route and no fixed date, so watch for the yellow boards.

The on-street bays that changed on 3 September

A separate permanent order, made on Tuesday 25 August and in force from Thursday 3 September, took parking places out of six Andover streets.

Parking places are revoked on:

  • Bere Hill Crescent, north east side, two separate six metre lengths
  • Hawke Close, off the Admirals Way spine, south side
  • Jasmine Court off Floral Way, north west side
  • Jervis Court, off Admirals Way, east side
  • Tintagel Close, west side, off King Arthurs Way
  • Armstrong Rise in Charlton, west side

Two Andover disabled persons parking places are converted rather than removed. On South End Road and on Hanson Road, the disabled bay is replaced with limited waiting, Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm, two hours with no return within two hours, or permit holders only. The Hanson Road length also joins the Station Zone V permit area. A new disabled persons parking place is created on the north side of Jervis Court.

The car park changes are still with the council. Objections to Test Valley’s proposed Off Street Parking Places Order, advertised on 10 August, closed at 16:00 on Friday 11 September. The proposed order would:

  • replace the electric vehicle bays on level 2A of the Chantry Centre with parent and child bays
  • introduce season tickets at Winchester Road
  • make the temporary disabled bays at George Yard (East) permanent
  • confirm that the free options at Shepherds Spring Lane and Romsey Rapids no longer work through RingGo

Ten days after the deadline, nothing has been published to say whether the order has been made. The rules in force today are on our parking page.

Hampshire’s notices carry a standing caveat: adverse weather can postpone works at very short notice. The yellow sign boards at the works limits are updated faster than anything online.

Trains

Saturday 26 September is clear. Sunday 27 September is not.

  • Sunday 27 September: the lines between Reading and Basingstoke close all day for maintenance. Reading to Salisbury services, which call at Andover, will start from Basingstoke instead. CrossCountry and Great Western services are affected too.
  • The same Sunday brings all-day closures in the Eastleigh, Staines and Aldershot areas, so a connection through any of those is worth checking.
  • Saturday 26 September has no engineering work on Andover’s line at all.

The weekend to plan around is 10 and 11 October, when the lines in the Salisbury area close all weekend.

  • On the Saturday, London Waterloo to Salisbury stopping services terminate at Basingstoke, a revised service runs between Basingstoke and Andover, and buses run from Andover to Gillingham via Salisbury. Waterloo to Exeter services start from Gillingham.
  • On the Sunday, the afternoon and evening Waterloo to Salisbury services do not run at all, Reading to Salisbury services do not run, and the Basingstoke to Andover shuttle and the Andover to Gillingham buses run again.

The roads that matter here

Four routes carry almost everything in and out of Andover, and knowing which one a closure sits on tells you immediately whether it will affect you.

  • The A303. The trunk road runs along the south and west of the town, with junctions at the A3093 Picket Twenty to the east and the A343 to the west. It is a National Highways road, not a county one, so closures on it are announced by National Highways rather than Hampshire, and they are almost always overnight.
  • The A343 Newbury Road. North east out of the town through Alamein towards Newbury, past the rail bridge and Smannell Road. This is the route that ties Andover to the A34 corridor.
  • The A3057 Winchester Road. South out of the town from Western Avenue and Old Winton Road down to the A303 slip road, then on through the Test valley towards Stockbridge and Romsey. It is the road that connects the two halves of the borough.
  • The A342. West towards Ludgershall and the Wiltshire border.

Most Hampshire resurfacing in Andover happens on the residential distributor roads rather than these four, and is done at night: Vigo Road, King Arthurs Way, Charlton Road, Upper Drove and Monxton Road have all had night closures in recent programmes.

Parking in Andover

Andover’s parking rules are more generous than most Hampshire towns, and the detail that saves people the most money is the one they find out by accident.

Every council car park in Andover is free after 4pm, every day, free all day on Sundays, and free on recognised public holidays. There are 15 of them. Overnight parking is free from the moment the charging period ends at 4pm until 08:30 the following morning, and the pay and display machines will issue a ticket for the next charging day if you buy one after charging hours end.

Free parking starts at four o'clock, but two car parks will shut you in if you leave the car overnight.

Who parks free, and where

  • Blue Badge holders park free all day in medium and long stay car parks, and free for up to three hours in short stay car parks or the marked High Street bays. The badge must be displayed with the expiry date face up.
  • Solo motorcycles park free in the designated motorcycle bays within car parks.
  • Coaches pay £3.50 for five hours or £7.00 all day. Shepherd’s Spring Lane coach parking is by prior arrangement only because of a locked height barrier, on 07833 930655.

For the Leisure Centre and The Lights

Both sit on the same side of town, and the council names five car parks for them: Leisure Centre, Marlborough Street, West Street, Shepherd’s Spring Lane (a five-minute walk, and mind the 10pm lock) and the Simplyhealth car park, which is open to the public on weekday evenings from 5pm to 6.30am and at weekends. Simplyhealth is pay and display on Saturdays from 8.30am to 4pm and free the rest of the time it is available. The adjacent Simplyhealth staff car park is private, and the council asks people not to cut across it.

Getting to the station without a car

A £2.1 million scheme to rebuild the walking and cycling approach to Andover station was funded in summer 2026. Hampshire County Council leads it. Test Valley Borough Council agreed £158,973 of Community Infrastructure Levy money and £41,027 of Section 106 developer contributions towards it at full Council on 22 July 2026.

The work extends the cycleway from the top of Bishops Way to Station Approach, realigns the Cross Lane and Avenue junction to make room on the south side, adds crossing points on Station Approach and Cross Lane, and creates a new green space with planting. It is the third version of the scheme after several rounds of public consultation, and the council recorded that the junction changes “received overwhelming support”. Expect Cross Lane and Station Approach to be disrupted while it is built.

How to check a road yourself

The source worth knowing is Hampshire County Council’s public notices page, which carries the statutory temporary road closure orders for every county road, filterable to Test Valley. Read the duration of order paragraph in the body of a notice, not the start and end dates in its header. Those are the dates the notice is advertised, not the dates the road is shut, which is why an eight day closure can appear under an end date six months away.

A second trap is worth knowing. The same closure appears twice, once as an intention to make an order and once as an order made, and only the second is a commitment. North Way was advertised as an intention on 17 August and as a made order on 31 August, with identical wording in between.

Hampshire’s own notices point on to One.Network, but that site now asks for an account before it will show its works list. For the A303, the A34 and other trunk roads, National Highways publishes a seven day closure report as a spreadsheet, reissued daily. If you are staying for an evening performance, remember charging has stopped by 4pm, so an evening at the theatre parks free. Avoid Shepherd’s Spring Lane if you will still be there after 10pm.
